Time for crayfish! Traditionally,  a Swedish crayfish party takes place in the end of the summer. Crayfish parties have spread to all the Nordic countries and are generally held during August. This tradition was started because crayfish harvesting in Sweden was, for most of the 20th century, legally limited to late summer.  Since the Swedish crayfish became extinct, Swedes all over the world rely on IKEA and China to deliver these yummy and delicious shell fish for our sometimes rowdy parties.

It is the 20th time the Swedish Women’s Educational Association arranges a true crayfish party with all the customary party accessories that are obligatory. These consitute of comical paper hats, paper tablecloths, paper lanterns (often depicting the Man in the Moon), and bibs. A cheerful atmosphere prevails amid noisy eating and traditional drinking songs (printed in a little booklet in English so that everyone can take part). It is considered customary to suck the juice out of the crayfish before shelling it. Don’t worry, we will show you how it is done!

Similar to last year, SWEA partners with the Swedish Cultural Society in organising the saltiest event of the year. The tickets include a three course meal  with enterntainment during dinner. Only 60 tickets will be sold, so purchase your ticket early! Last year we sold out.

All proceeds go to SWEA Vancouver.

A fun, casual dinner at the Scandinavian Centre in Burnaby, BC to celebrate Finland.

This will be a potluck dinner — so bring a dish to share! We will dine out on the deck, under the stars (weather permitting), so bring a sweater or a blanket if it’s a little chilly. If you have concerns about food allergies , sensitivities, or general preference, you can bring a picnic for yourself and your group.  The kitchen will be available to heat up dishes if needed. RSVP’s appreciated, including what dish you think you will bring so we can try to have a good variety of things to eat.

Organized by Vancouver Finlandia Club.
