Scandinavian Business Club Dinner

Rev. Peter Smyth “The Mission to Seafarers”

Peter is the Senior Chaplain of The Mission to Seafarers in Vancouver. He was born and grew up in Northern Ireland and has lived and travelled in India, Nepal and Germany. Ordained in Christ Church Cathedral Dublin (Church of Ireland – Anglican. Moved to Canada in 2001 to Thunder Bay, Ontario, in 2011 to Sault Ste Marie, and in 2016 to Vancouver to his current position.

At the Mission to Seafarers in Vancouver (part of a worldwide organization www.missiontoseafarers.org present in over 200 ports) their goal is the same it was when it all began in England in the 1830’s and that is to care for the spiritual, physical and emotional needs of all seafarers and their families. Seafarers are isolated from their families and the rest of society spending many months at sea. The Mission to Seafarers response is a ministry of ‘presence’ and ‘hospitality’ done by visiting seafarers on their ship, listening and letting them know we care, and by providing centres that are a ‘home away from home’ where they can go and relax, speak with family, send money home, etc. They also advocate for seafarers, keeping a watchful eye on conditions on board and helping them know their rights.

Join us to hear Peter tell us about the work of the Mission and stories of the Port of Vancouver and the seafarers who visit, and we should all learn more and grow in our understanding of, and appreciation for, the seafarer.
