The 19th Annual Swedish Crayfish Party

Date: Saturday, August 26th, 2017

Time for crayfish! Traditionally,  a Swedish crayfish party takes place in the end of the summer. Crayfish parties have spread to all the Nordic countries and are generally held during August. This tradition was started because crayfish harvesting in Sweden was, for most of the 20th century, legally limited to late summer.  Since the Swedish crayfish became extinct, Swedes all over the world rely on IKEA and China to deliver these yummy and delicious shell fish for our sometimes rowdy parties.

It is the 19th time the Swedish Women’s Educational Association arranges a true crayfish party with all the customary party accessories that are obligatory. These consitute of comical paper hats, paper tablecloths, paper lanterns (often depicting the Man in the Moon), and bibs. A cheerful atmosphere prevails amid noisy eating and traditional drinking songs (printed in a little booklet in English so that everyone can take part). It is considered customary to suck the juice out of the crayfish before shelling it. Don’t worry, we will show you how it is done!

Similar to last year, SWEA partners with the Swedish Cultural Society in organising the saltiest event of the year. The tickets include a three course meal  with enterntainment during dinner, and dancing to Swedish music after. Only 60 tickets will be sold, so purchase your ticket early! Last year we sold out.

BIOGRAPHY

Musician and composer Antti Paalanen has been prominent in the field of Finnish contemporary folk music for  many years.

Antti Paalanen makes his music on the bisonoric (’diatonic’) accordion, a common instrument in Finnish folk music for the past century. He has employed an organic performance style, new techniques and new expressive
sonorities to expand the potential of the instrument to embrace a variety of genres.

Paalanen comes from South Ostrobothnia, a region rich in the pelimanni (’traditional musician’) tradition of
Finnish folk music. Between 1989 and 1996, Paalanen won the Finnish pelimanni championships on the diatonic
accordion four times, and he placed second in the diatonic accordion world championships in Austria in 1999.

Paalanen has released three solo albums: Äärelä (2007), Breathbox (2010) and Meluta (2014, 2015 in central Europe). He is active as a musician and a composer in a number of contexts in Finland.
