Join us in a pre­sen­ta­tion of a cel­e­bra­tion of the art and life of the great Finnish Painter, Akseli Gal­len-Kalle­la, who was born in 1865, the same year as Jean Sibelius and anoth­er great Finnish artist, Pekka Halo­nen.

Bob Poutt and his son Ron, an artist him­self, will explore Gallen-Kallela’s upbring­ing and train­ing as an artist, his mar­riage and the loss of a young daugh­ter, his trav­els and the homes that he designed and built for him­self, and the impor­tance of the­se in the devel­op­ment of his art.

Gallen-Kallela’s out­put was pro­lific; slides will be shown rep­re­sent­ing the artist’s por­tray­al of ordi­nary Finnish coun­try peo­ple, the Finnish wilder­ness and, espe­cial­ly, the Kale­vala. Ron will describe the evo­lu­tion of Gallen-Kallela’s artis­tic style, its rela­tion­ship to the pre­vail­ing Euro­pean artis­tic move­ments and how, in recent years, his art has come to the notice of seri­ous col­lec­tors out­side of Fin­land.

The Runeberg Cho­rus will also be per­form­ing.
