New scholarships added to Finland House Society 2016 Scholarship Program
August 1, 2016 – Finland House Society (FHS) has launched its 2016 scholarship program for fulltime students of Finnish descent. Since its inception in 2010, the number of scholarships awarded annually has grown steadily thanks to the fundraising efforts of so many in the community. This year, FHS is pleased to announce the addition of two new scholarships for specific fields of study. The Kauko Salokannel Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a student studying the trades such as millwright, plumbing, or electrical, etc. The Scholarship for Music Studies in Memory of Robert Dennis Orava will hopefully support a student dreaming of a career in the music industry.
The scholarship committee is now accepting applications for the 2016 program which provides annual scholarships for post secondary education to fulltime students who are of Finnish descent. To qualify, the student must meet the following criteria:
- The student must be a resident of British Columbia and be accepted for admission in an accredited post-secondary educational institution providing a degree, a diploma, or a certification for its program of studies, in BC or elsewhere. The student must provide proof of registration and transcript of latest marks and studies.
- The student must be of good character and must provide recent written references from a high school, college, or university administrator and two others including an employer, if applicable.
- The student may apply and be awarded a FHS scholarship every 2 years (not consecutively) up to a maximum of three.
Applications should be accompanied with a covering letter giving reasons for requesting the scholarship and describing the applicant’s personal interests, hobbies, volunteer work, career goals and aspirations. The applications, relevant information and documents must be received by mail by 4.00 p.m. on November 1, 2016. The applications must be sent to:
