Glenn Sigurdson — Mediator, Lawyer, Honorary Consul General for Iceland

“Pragmatics of Doing Business with Indigenous Communities and People”

Glenn Sigurdson has been known as a mediator, negotiator, lawyer, facilitator, adjudicator, economist, teacher, writer, but now all of these influences have melded and today he states, “I lead without owning” “working in the space between”. Much of his work is within and among companies, communities, civil society organizations, and governments in the public and private sectors, building partnerships and resolving differences. My role is to deliver a special kind of leadership as the “man in the middle”. Today many would describe this as the work of a Social Innovator.

A cornerstone of this talk will be on the pragmatics of doing business with Indigenous communities and people. Placed in historical and current context, from the Fur trade, our family business for over a century on Lake Winnipeg, and my years of working as a professional between large and small companies and communities. This is the lifeblood of reconciliation, a word that is coming to “the Main Stream”. The last decade however, it is part of a much larger story, of identity and diversity, and placing it in that big frame is important.

Glenn is also author of Vikings on a Prairie Ocean in which he blends personal memoir, family history and Icelandic lore in a unique and wide-ranging autobiography.
