Scandinavian Importance to the BC Forest Industry
Henrik Laursen has extensive experience with forest products and provides his expertise and consulting in product and market development through his business, Danvik Marketing Services.

The B.C. Forest Industry has a long history with people from Scandinavia. This extends to Alberta as well, and further East. The industries include: engineering, shipping, logging and forestry to pulp and paper and, of course, also sawmilling. Be it Port Hardy to Victoria, Nanaimo to Port Alberni, or Gold River up to Tahsis, there is a lot of history involving Scandinavians on Vancouver Island. Same for the Lower Mainland, extending up to MacKenzie and beyond.

A book was written years ago, titled: “Bull of the Woods.” Fascinating reading, with many, let’s say, very colourful characters. Some of them will be mentioned in the presentation.

The current industry has substantially changed from many companies on the Coast to essentially only a handful of players. As most know, we have an on-going ‘war’ with the US over softwood lumber, as will be mentioned in the presentation. This ‘war-fare’ extends all the way back to the late 1800’s. It may seem like we are ‘Out-of-the-Woods’, but not quite yet.

Glenn Sigurdson — Mediator, Lawyer, Honorary Consul General for Iceland

“Pragmatics of Doing Business with Indigenous Communities and People”

Glenn Sigurdson has been known as a mediator, negotiator, lawyer, facilitator, adjudicator, economist, teacher, writer, but now all of these influences have melded and today he states, “I lead without owning” “working in the space between”. Much of his work is within and among companies, communities, civil society organizations, and governments in the public and private sectors, building partnerships and resolving differences. My role is to deliver a special kind of leadership as the “man in the middle”. Today many would describe this as the work of a Social Innovator.

A cornerstone of this talk will be on the pragmatics of doing business with Indigenous communities and people. Placed in historical and current context, from the Fur trade, our family business for over a century on Lake Winnipeg, and my years of working as a professional between large and small companies and communities. This is the lifeblood of reconciliation, a word that is coming to “the Main Stream”. The last decade however, it is part of a much larger story, of identity and diversity, and placing it in that big frame is important.

Glenn is also author of Vikings on a Prairie Ocean in which he blends personal memoir, family history and Icelandic lore in a unique and wide-ranging autobiography.

Chewters Chocolates — Wade Pugh, Partner & VP Manufacturing

Wade Pugh is Manager Partner and VP Manufacturing for Chewters Chocolates. Chewters specialize in one-shot depositing and high-speed wrapping, including nut butter cups, bars, squares, filled chocolates, bark bites and much more. Chewters 55,000 square foot facility, located in Delta, BC, produces many of the chocolate products you see in your local stores and in the hospitality industry.

If you’ve stayed at Las Vegas’s Bellagio, Wynn or Caesars Palace hotels, or recently cruised with Royal Caribbean or Celebrity cruise lines, chances are you’ve got more than a passing acquaintance with Wade Pugh and Chewters Chocolates. Chewters makes pillow chocolates or “turndowns” — those little complimentary treats left on hotel beds.

“There’s something romantic about it when you’re creating chocolate from scratch,” said Pugh, who is also a leading supplier to the Canadian hospitality industry.

Founded in 1984, Chewters Chocolates purchased Dynamic Chocolates in 2015, combining its chocolate expertise with Dynamic’s manufacturing capabilities. Since 2015, under the leadership of CEO Richard Foley, Chewters has implemented capital improvements, training programs, new team members and new processes resulting in improvements in productivity, quality and efficiency.

Susan Cartwright-Coates: Cartwright Jewelers – 85 Years Strong

My grandfather always said, “if you can see over the counter you were old enough to work”. That was the start of a career and a passion. I am a third-generation jeweler as my grandfather, James Cartwright started the business in 1933, my father, Don Cartwright followed in his footsteps. In 1985 I joined the family business and have in turn taken it over. This year we celebrated our 85th year in business. My philosophy is “Always give back to the community for they are the ones who are supporting you.”

Excellent customer service has been and will always be the cornerstone of our family business, combined with consistent top-quality craftsmanship and design. This is the reason for the continued success of our jewellery store. As a third-generation business it is truly an honour to serve customers who dealt with my father or grandfather and to help their children and their children’s children.

Susan has been happily married to Brian for 25 years. Susan’s daughter Chelsea runs Cartwright Jewelers E-mails, all social media; Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Susan is the very proud Grandmother of 4 little munchkin’s, and another one on the way in August. Life is good!
